Division A Forum
Saturday, February 28, 2009/10:30 AM

As Toastmasters, we constantly work to improve our speaking ability. We carefully count our “Ahs”, “Uhs” and “You Knows”. We count on our fellow Toastmasters to coach us, offering helpful suggestions. And we mark our progress through the completion of manual speech projects. As Toastmasters, we are pretty good at giving speeches, as long as the venue remains the same.

However, what happens when you have to give a speech in a different location, in different circumstances, perhaps in front of strangers? Do those well-behaving, disciplined butterflies in your stomach suddenly break into a samba? Perhaps extending your practice into a new venue would help to hone those speaking skills and keep the butterflies in line.

The Forum is an opportunity for 8 Toastmasters to deliver manual speeches in a public venue, to have them evaluated, and to speak before non-toastmasters on a public platform.

In a two hour period, we will complete 8 speech projects, along with 8 evaluations. This means we have to place an extraordinary emphasis on timeliness of speeches, evaluations, and meeting activities. To keep things running smoothly and to ensure that everyone gets their opportunity to participate, we will observe a few simple rules of the Forum:

  1. All speeches must be manual speeches. Bring your manual for evaluation and signing.
  2. Speech times must be limited to 7 minutes. When the red light comes on at 7 minutes, the Toastmaster will step up to thank the speaker.
  3. Speakers must bring an evaluator to evaluate another speaker, or the speaker may alternatively evaluate another speaker. Evaluators may use this opportunity to complete a project in the Competent Leadership manual.
  4. Remember that The Forum is held in a public venue. Refrain from highly-charged political and religious themes in your speeches.

Evaluators, please register by email to the Forum Coordinator, Forum Coordinator. Questions? Contact Forum Coordinator. Want to coordinate a Forum as a High Performance Leadership project? Contact the Division A Governor.

All speaker slots have been filled.
